Frequently Asked Questions
Please contact our team to discuss these and any other questions about becoming a New York Proton Center patient.
How soon can I receive a consultation?
When you or your physician initiate an inquiry on your behalf, our Intake team will contact you within two business days to answer your questions and request additional information, including medical records, results of imaging and lab tests, and treatment history. This information will be reviewed by one of our radiation oncologist specialists who will determine if you are a candidate for proton therapy. Fill out our form to request a consultation.
Will my insurance cover proton therapy?
The New York Proton Center participates with many insurance providers, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our team will assist you in obtaining coverage for your treatment. Learn more about insurance coverage.
Does the New York Proton Center offer financial assistance?
The New York Proton Center has a Financial Assistance Policy that allows patients to apply for a discount on out-of-pocket expenses that are not covered by insurance. Visit the Financial Assistance page to view the policy, sliding fee discount table, and application documents.
In addition, our Forward Together platform enables patients to create a Support Registry to request and receive support from family and friends for non-clinical aspects of care.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments you will need is based on several variables, including your diagnosis and the stage and location of your tumor. Some patients will receive as few as one to five treatments (“fractions”) and others may require 30 or more. The number of treatments will be discussed during your consultation.
How soon can I begin treatment?
After we determine you are a candidate for proton therapy, a Patient Navigator will contact you to schedule a simulation (“sim”) planning session where images will be taken to help our clinicians plan your treatment.
Your first treatment will begin after your radiation oncologist and our medical physicists and dosimetrists develop a personalized proton treatment plan based on the images from your simulation. This process typically takes approximately 8 to 15 business days.
Can I receive proton therapy while receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or another form of cancer treatment?
Yes. Many of our patients receive proton therapy and concurrent chemotherapy (chemoradiation) or immunotherapy. Our team will help schedule these treatments at times that work best for you.
Can I speak with an NYPC patient about his or her treatment experience?
Yes. Through our peer mentoring program, we can arrange for you to speak with a patient who completed treatment for the same type of cancer. Contact our Social Work team for more information.
Can I bring a friend or family member with me to treatment?
Yes, a friend or family member can accompany you to the New York Proton Center. However, he or she cannot accompany you into the treatment area. Learn more about our visitor policy here.
