2nd Annual Golf Tournament Raises $50K to Assist New York Proton Center Patients with Non-Clinical Needs

October 28, 2024

Funds will support New York Proton Center patients with treatment-related costs like groceries, travel and housing expenses, insurance copays and medications

Kenilworth, NJ — October 14, 2024 — The New York Proton Center (NYPC) and BR+A Charitable Foundation hosted their second annual golf tournament at the Galloping Hill Golf Course, raising $50,000 to help NYPC patients access non-clinical financial support during treatment. This year, 124 golfers participated in the tournament on October 10.

All funds will support patients accessing financial assistance to meet additional, non-clinical costs during treatment through NYPC’s Forward Together program. The free platform, powered by the WiTT Group, Inc., combines the simplicity of a wedding registry with personalized patient needs, making it easier for people to ask for and receive help with day-to-day expenses during their treatment. Available in English and Spanish, Forward Together allows patients to make their needs visible and receive additional support from those within and beyond their network. Anyone can give — and all patients visible to donors are verified by clinical professionals.

“The success of our second annual golf tournament reflects the incredible commitment of our community to supporting our patients beyond just their medical care. While we focus on delivering world-class proton therapy, we know that our patients face numerous other challenges during their treatment journey,” said Jonathan Weinbach, CEO of the New York Proton Center. “These funds will help ensure that financial barriers don’t make things harder for our patients, many of whom are already undergoing one of the most difficult periods of their life.”

Since NYPC partnered with WiTT in April 2023, more than 100 patients have signed up, accessing thousands of dollars for diverse non-clinical needs. Transportation and housing expenses, groceries, insurance copays, and medications are among the most common requests for support.

“At BR+A, we value our long-term relationship with the New York Proton Center and continue to support their mission in defeating cancer with their amazing proton therapy work. As an engineering firm that specializes in the design of proton therapy facilities throughout the world, we are so excited and truly grateful for the opportunity to contribute directly back to the proton patient community through the efforts of our Charitable Foundation,” said Michael Fahey, Principal, Executive Vice President, BR+A Consulting Engineers.

“For some patients, simple things like groceries and transportation can become an extra burden in the midst of treatment,” said Marie Estrada, a former patient of NYPC who spoke at the event. “It’s not just about the financial support – it’s about a community of people willing to help.”
